This recipe is a true gem of Turkish cuisine and is loved by Muslims around the world. So, tie your apron and let’s embark on this delicious culinary journey!
Ingredients For the dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup warm water
For the topping:
- 300 grams ground lamb or beef
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
- 1 red bell pepper, finely chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley, finely chopped (for garnish)
- Lemon wedges (for serving)
Instructions:
In the name of Allah, let’s begin by preparing the dough. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt. Mix well.
Gradually add warm water to the dry ingredients while kneading until you form a smooth and elastic dough. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour. If it’s too dry, add a bit more water. Cover the dough with a clean cloth and let it rest for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
While the dough is resting, let’s prepare the flavorful topping. In a separate bowl, mix the ground lamb or beef with chopped onion, tomatoes, bell pepper, minced garlic, tomato paste, olive oil, cumin, paprika, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly combined.
Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F). Divide the dough into small portions and roll each portion into a thin round shape on a floured surface. Aim for a thickness of about 2-3 millimeters.
Place the rolled dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread a generous amount of the prepared meat topping evenly on each dough round, leaving a small border around the edges.
Carefully transfer the Lahmacun to the preheated oven and bake for about 10-12 minutes or until the edges are golden brown and the topping is cooked through.
Once baked, remove the Lahmacun from the oven and sprinkle some freshly chopped parsley over the top for a burst of freshness.
Serve the Lahmacun hot with a squeeze of lemon juice. It is traditionally enjoyed by rolling it up and savoring each delicious bite.
Alhamdulillah! Your homemade Lahmacun is ready to be enjoyed. Serve it as a main dish, a delightful appetizer, or share it with family and friends during gatherings. May this dish bring joy and happiness to your table, and may the flavors transport you to the vibrant streets of Turkey. Bon appétit!
Note: Feel free to customize your Lahmacun by adding your favorite toppings such as sliced onions, peppers, chopped herbs, or a drizzle of tahini sauce. Let your creativity and taste buds guide you in creating your own unique version of this beloved favourite turkish dish.
