How to make rotis

Roti, also known as chapati, is a traditional Indian flatbread that is a staple in Indian cuisine. It is made with simple ingredients and is an essential part of many Indian meals. Rotis are easy to make, and with a little bit of practice, you can make perfect rotis in no time.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to make rotis:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp oil or ghee (clarified butter)

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, add the whole wheat flour and salt. Mix well.
  2. Slowly add water to the flour mixture, mixing it with your hands as you go. Keep mixing until a dough forms.
  3. Once the dough has formed, add a tablespoon of oil or ghee and knead the dough again. This will make the dough smoother and more pliable.
  4. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 10-15 minutes. This will help the gluten in the dough to relax, making it easier to roll out.
  5. Divide the dough into equal-sized balls, about the size of a golf ball. Roll each ball between your palms until it is smooth and round.
  6. Using a rolling pin, roll out each ball into a flat circle. The circle should be around 6-8 inches in diameter.
  7. Heat a tawa or griddle on medium heat. Once the tawa is hot, place the rolled-out roti on it.
  8. Let the roti cook for about 30 seconds, or until you see small bubbles form on the surface.
  9. Flip the roti over and let it cook for another 30 seconds.
  10. Using a pair of tongs, lift the roti off the tawa and place it directly on the flame. The roti will puff up due to the heat. Let it cook for a few seconds, then flip it over and cook the other side.
  11. Once the roti is cooked on both sides, remove it from the flame and place it on a plate.
  12. Repeat the process with the remaining balls of dough.
  13. Brush each roti with a little bit of ghee or butter for added flavor.

Tips:

  • The consistency of the dough is essential to making good rotis. If the dough is too dry, the rotis will be tough. If the dough is too wet, the rotis will not puff up properly.
  • If the roti does not puff up on the flame, you can try pressing it lightly with a spatula. This will help the steam inside the roti to escape, making it easier to puff up.
  • If you are having trouble rolling out the rotis into a perfect circle, you can use a circular plate or lid as a guide.

Making rotis is a simple process that requires a little bit of practice. With these easy steps and tips, you can make delicious rotis that are perfect for any Indian meal. So, grab some flour, water, and oil, and start making some tasty rotis today!
